A Unique Pilot Program for EV Smart Charging by FortisAlberta in Canada

As electric vehicle demands are increasing month by month, more units of charging stations are being set up by various companies across the world. North America is one of the major automobile markets, and people are preferring more electric vehicles than ever before.

As per the latest news, FortisAlberta, an owner of a major part of the electricity distribution network in Alberta province, is leveling up its game and getting ready for the future.

To prepare for the future, where more and more people will be preferring electric vehicles and EV charging stations are going to increase in Alberta province, the company has initiated a unique program, named Smart Charging Pilot for electric vehicle owners.

What is the EV Smart Charging Pilot program?

As part of the pilot program, the company invited all the electric vehicle owners of the Alberta province and gathered data about their charging habits. The main agenda for gathering the data was to understand the demand for electricity and managing with the increased demand for electricity for EV charging.

The EV Smart Charging pilot program is one of its kind for rural Alberta. The program was approved by Alberta Utilities Commission.

The company has decided to give incentives to all the participants of this pilot program and the gathered data will be analyzed for 2023.

With the analysis, the company will be drawing out the solution for the challenges, that will be arising due to the increase in electricity demands because of EV charging. It will help the company to reduce the charging cost and manage the electrical grids.

What are current EV adoption and expected future in Alberta?

As per the current data, there are around 5600 electrical vehicles registered in Alberta province currently and it is expected to be increasing in future years. As per federal government goals, all passenger trucks and light-duty vehicles will be emitting zero CO2 by the year 2035.
