Ford Tesla Partnership in EV Supercharger Network

  • Ford Tesla Partnership will be providing access of Tesla Supercharger network to Ford Owners.
  • Ford planned to use NACS plugs in Next Generation EVs.

Ford Tesla Partnership – Ford and Tesla have come up with a surprising partnership, where Ford EV owners would be able to use Tesla’s Superchargers across the United States and Canada. Tesla has decided to open its EV supercharger network access to Ford owners.

With this partnership, Ford owners would be given access to the US’s largest fast-charging network while other OEMs like General Motors would be having a difficult choice to make.

What is the size of the Tesla Supercharger network?

The Tesla supercharger network contains a total of 12000 charging stations across the US and Canada as per a CNBC report. After the partnership, Ford EV owners will be getting access to the network in early 2024.

Ford has also decided to include a NACS – North American Charging Standard plug for their next generations of EVs instead of using their CCS – Combined Charging System plug.

How did the news break out?

Ford CEO – Jim Farley revealed the news in a Twitter Spaces conversation with Tesla CEO – Elon Musk, that was held last week. Jim Farley also shared that the rival EV automakers will be facing a difficult situation and dilemma.

Jim Farley also revealed to CNBC that the CCS is a great standard but, migrating their future EV plugs from CCS to NACS would enable their customers to use the large EV charger network of Tesla Supercharger.

The decision is a great choice for the Ford owners who will be getting access to Tesla’s large supercharger network, but it can be a dreadful choice for Tesla owners who would be sharing the Supercharger network, which is already being used at full capacity currently.

What are General Motors’ views on Open Charging Network?

General Motors did not respond to Jim Farley’s remark particularly, but the automakers did share their views on this partnership. GM believed in opening the EV charging networks for everyone and using a standard plug will enable and push EV adoption across the world.

General Motors revealed that they are already working to build an open network for fast chargers across North America. The company is on the path of using another CCS open standard connector with SAE International and a few more companies.

Final Words

Ford – Tesla partnership will help the Ford owners in getting access to Tesla’s huge supercharger network. However, they will be able to use the supercharger by plugging in an adapter to their CCS plugs.

The EV charging time is still a huge factor in the adoption of EVs, but this partnership will be giving a push to EV adoption across the globe. Also, the EV automakers will be using a standard plug to charge, instead of creating a monopoly in the EV market.
