Germany to start testing for Wireless Charging for Electric Vehicles

Wireless charging is not the latest technology for your handy electronics. But If you are told that, you can charge your electric vehicle wirelessly on roads. Then, that will surely fascinate you. Probably, no one wants to wait until their EVs get fully charged up in a long drive.

Recently, Germany is said to have started the testing for Wireless EV charging technology. A company with name Electreon is said to receive huge funding for the same. They have planned to set up two statically charged stations where electric vehicles take a break and it will charge wirelessly. At first, they are using EV buses to test this technology.

To make this testing project successful, Two companies. EnBW and Electreon have collaborated to set up a one-kilometer-long road, also known as Electric Road System, in Germany. This specially designed road would contain many magnetic coils and it will be helping EVs to get charged. The magnetic coils will be transferring the electric power to the EVs.

What is Wireless EV charging?

It is a technology that supports the charging of electric vehicles wirelessly. Electric vehicles can be charged up with either Static Wireless Charging or Dynamic Wireless Charging.

Static Wireless Charing technology has been around for a while in the EV world. It usually requires your vehicles to keep stationary in one place during the charging time.

Dynamic Wireless Charing technology is still in the development phase. With this technology, you can drive and charge your EV at the same time. As the technology is complicated and in the starting phase of development. It will take some time until you can use it.

How does Wireless EV charging works?

We all must thank Nikola Tesla for his amazing invention of transferring power wirelessly. Wireless EV charging had not possible without his inventions.

In the case of Static Wireless EV Charging, you need to keep your EV stationary either at some parking lot or at a charging station. There is generally one charging pad beneath your EV, which contains coils and it transfers the power to your EV battery.

In the case of Dynamic Wireless EV Charging, you can keep on driving your EV on the road. The road or path is generally designed in such a way that, it contains many power transmitters in the road. Your EV battery keeps on receiving power during the time you drive on that road.

Final Words

Electric-based mobility is never feasible until we get all infrastructure set up to use it. Initially, EV charging station infrastructure was a challenge, which is getting better with time. When I see the growth of EVs in the world now, it won’t be wrong to say that future is getting EV infrastructure ready. Currently, many companies are trying to solve feasibility problems for Wireless EV charging. Hence soon you will be using Wireless EV charging for your electric vehicle..
